Tuesday Simple Systems

Notice to members

One of the most satisfying developments in the last couple of years has been the success of the Thursday evening duplicate. Initially this was limited to members who had come through Val Kennewell’s Improvers class, but more recently the numbers have increased as they have been joined by other club members. They are allowed to play the simple systems and conventions taught in the Improvers classes held on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

The natural development for these new members wishing to improve and play more bridge is to play on a Tuesday evening.

For many years the Tuesday evening duplicate has been recognised as having a relaxed and friendly approach to competitive bridge, particularly when compared to Monday and Wednesday evenings. It is very important to retain this special approach, but it is also important to satisfy the needs of these new members who have progressed from a Thursday evening. Some of these members are asking the question “Why can’t we play the systems and conventions taught in our classes, and permitted on a Thursday evening?”

The committee has therefore decided to make some small changes to the Tuesday Simple Systems which will: -

  1. Continue to provide members with an opportunity to play competitive duplicate bridge in a guaranteed friendly, social and courteous environment

  2. Ensure that the members who attend the Improver’s Classes are given the opportunity to improve their bridge by playing the methods taught in these classes.

  3. Permit the identical systems and conventions to be played on a Tuesday and Thursday evening.

In order to implement the above proposals a new system card has been produced specifying the systems and conventions that may be played. Members will not be allowed to diverge from the systems detailed on this card. Members may optionally carry this card with them when playing. These changes include the introduction of a simple version of Benji Acol, plus a small number of additional conventions aimed at improving members bridge skills and not at disadvantaging their opponents.

Detailed notes and examples of the use of these systems will be made available to members.
